This is a pivotal moment: will you finally drench your opponent and gain the respect of all party-goers, or will you strike out after an embarrassingly aggressive and intense throw?
Get in the Correct Stance!

Don’t let fate decide. Follow these tips on how to throw a ball and hit the bullseye at every party this summer:
1. Start with the ball at your chest. In your throwing hand, of course.
2. Align your body with the target. Feet and shoulders should make a line with the bulls-eye.
3. Step with the foot opposite of your throwing hand.
4. Rotate your hips first, then shoulders.
5. Whip it good! Use your full arm to get as much extension as possible to give you a whip effect. You should feel like you’re pulling the ball down.
6. Bask in glory. Perfect execution and a perfect throw – that dunk tank bulls-eye didn’t stand a chance! Now’s your chance to offer your opponent a towel or make some other snarky remark to assert your dominance in front of all of your admirers.

The undead are experiencing unrest, and it’s only a matter of time before their thirst is too much to bear. This summer is very likely the striking time for the zombies, with all those noisy outdoor activities and meat grilling fests. It’s absolutely essential that you begin preparation right now for the impending zombie apocalypse.

Consider what activities you could be engaged in when the zombie hoards attack. Odds are you’ll be entertaining at a BBQ and probably in the middle of a radical run. You might even be mid-jump in that bouncy house of doom when a zombie lunges out of nowhere for your jugular. Are you prepared to fend off a walker at any given time, under any circumstances?

If the answer is no, you’ve got some shaping up to do.

For starters, get your survival pack in order, and make sure it’s accessible at all times. Some essential items to have in your survival pack include a silent weapon of some kind (don’t want to alert the undead masses to your whereabouts), some sort of makeshift shelter – preferably sound and teeth proof, and some way to find and prepare food and water.

That’s assuming you’re able to escape from the lunging claws of the walking corpses. To ensure you get to use your survival pack, it’s essential that you practice your jump-fighting skills, to make sure you can at least out maneuver a zombie on a bouncy surface.

We suggest you start practicing on a trampoline or invite yourself to as many bouncy house or radical run events as possible. Remember, you don’t just have to outrun the zombies, but your survival competitors as well. On the plus side, you only have to beat the next slowest person to survive! So get yourself into training mode to make sure you’re not the last one still bouncing in the great wide open when those zombies start their own radical run of ruin.

Have you ever looked at an invention and wondered how on earth someone thought of the idea that made that invention a reality? Some inventions come from spur of the moment ideas, some come from colossal mistakes, and some come from careful, dedicated planning.

So how did we get the highlight of children’s birthday parties—the inflatable bouncy house?

Things started with a man named John Scurlock. Here’s what you should know.

The Original Bouncy House

In 1959, a mechanical engineer named John Scurlock was working on a design for an inflatable tennis court cover. One day he noticed that some of his employees were having fun bouncing on the inflatable covers, and he was struck with an idea.

Mr. Scurlock decided to start a business. He created an inflatable walkway called The Space Walk. His wife, Frances came up with the idea to rent out the Space Walks at birthday parties, company picnics and other special events. (Source: hullabaloosbounce.com)

In the late 1960’s walls were added to increase safety and prevent falls, and Mr. Scurlock went on making inflatable domes, tents, and signs. He also invented the inflatable rescue pads used by firefighters to catch people falling out of buildings.

While the original Space Walk invented by Mr. Scurlock was fun, there was room for improvement. Modern bouncy houses are safer and more intricate. They have walls, slides, tunnels, and more. Last week we discussed the physics of trampolines. Now we’re going to look into what’s going on in our bodies when we jump on a trampoline or in a bounce house. Specifically, which muscles do you work by jumping?

A true whole-body workout

In reality, jumping on a trampoline actively engages just about every muscle in your body, from your facial muscles (because of that huge grin on your face!) down to your leg muscles (which propel you upward). In fact, NASA found that there is no more efficient workout known to man than a trampoline workout, and it’s their preferred method for rehabilitating astronauts back to earth’s strong gravity.

Of course, jumping works out some muscles more than others, mainly your lower body and heart.

Jump for heart health!

Just like running or riding a bike, jumping on a trampoline is a great cardiovascular exercise. It gets your heart rate up to that sweet spot perfect for burning calories and strengthening your heart muscle.

Bouncing on a trampoline works your core & back muscles

A lot of the work your muscles put in while jumping on a trampoline is to keep your body steady and balanced. Maintaining posture and balance is the primary job or your core and back—and though you may not realize it, jumping up and down keeps these muscles constantly active and engaged.

Jumping is a great workout for your butt, hips, and legs!

Your glutes (hip and butt muscles) along with your leg muscles are responsible for propelling you upward on your trampoline. The higher you jump, the harder these muscles work, and the better an exercise you get.

Jumping on trampolines is fun, but did you know that it’s also an excellent illustration of Newton’s Basic Laws of Motion?

There’s a lot going on, physics-wise, when you’re bouncing up and down on a trampoline. You don’t have to be an astrophysicist to understand the basics—let’s take a closer look at trampoline physics, starting with Newton’s laws of motion.

Newton’s Basic Laws of Motion

Newton’s three laws of motion are central to the way a trampoline works:

  1. Newton’s first law: the law of inertia. An object at rest will stay at rest, or an object in motion will stay in motion, unless acted upon by an external force. This is why you don’t get propelled upward if you simply stand on a trampoline—you have to move your legs (the external force). It’s also why you don’t keep flying upwards into outer space after the first jump—the external force of gravity brings you back down.
  2. Newton’s second law: acceleration. The acceleration of an object depends on its mass and the net force acting upon it. Basically, this means it requires more force to move a heavier, larger object (adults have to use more energy to bounce on a trampoline than children do).
  3. Newton’s third law: “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” This is where you get the bounce! When you push down on the trampoline (or fall downward onto the trampoline bed), Newton’s third law says that an equal and opposite reaction pushes back.

Hooke’s Law and your  springs

A trampoline is made up of a round piece of fabric (the trampoline “bed”) and springs that suspend the fabric from a rigid frame. Of these basic components, the springs are what make the magic happen. And it’s all because of Hooke’s Law which states that the force needed to extend a spring is proportional to the length of extension. The heavier the person on the trampoline, the longer the springs extend.

Trampolines get their bounce in the way that Hooke’s law interacts with Newton’s third law of motion. When you exert force on the springs, causing them to extend, then you have an “equal and opposite reaction” coming from the springs themselves. The springs push back with the same force that you exerted, and you’re sent flying into the air.

Summer is practically here, and that means it’s time to get your kids off the couch and outside to play. Exploring, sports, and countless activities outside are a big part of what makes summer so great.

But making sure your kids stay safe while playing outdoors presents its own set of difficulties. A sun burn, heat exhaustion, or pesky insect bite can take all the fun out of playing outside.

Here are 5 tips for staying safe outdoors that ensure your kids can get the most out of summer.

Be wary of exposure to the sun’s UV rays

For children over 6 months old, use a sunscreen with at least a 15 SPF rating. Try to apply 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply at least every 2 hours.

It’s also a good idea to have your kids wear hats and lightweight clothing that covers the arms and neck.

Combat dehydration with plenty of water breaks

Dehydration is of particular concern during the summer months. Keep your children hydrated by having them take plenty of water breaks while playing outside.

Be extra cautious around pools and swimming holes

To prevent accidental drowning, always make sure your kids are under close adult supervision when playing in the water, no matter how good of swimmers they are.

Know how to battle bugs

Insect repellent can be a good way to keep bugs away from your kids, but be careful about what type of repellent you buy, and how you apply it. There are some good repellents out there that use natural ingredients like lemon and oils. If you use a repellent with chemicals like DEET, find one with a low concentration and avoid applying directly on the face.

Insist on having your kids wear a helmet

Helmets are vital to preventing a debilitating brain injury. Here’s a good rule of thumb: if your kids are on wheels, make sure they’re wearing a helmet.

You can apply all these safety tips without being overbearing—the most important thing is to enable your children to enjoy the outdoors. And while you’re at it, you can rediscover a love of the great outdoors for yourself, too!
